Safeguard Your Ocular Health & Vision

At Island Eyecare, we acknowledge the role we play in your ocular health and vision. You’ll find state-of-the-art technology that supports us in our ability to detect, diagnose, and prevent vision-threatening eye conditions.

Eye exams allow us to identify general health concerns that can affect your visual system. In short, regular comprehensive eye exams play a big role in protecting your vision.

Why Do I Need an Eye Exam?

Eye exams help us monitor your ocular health and vision so we can pinpoint problems as they arise. Typically, eye diseases in their early stages are largely asymptomatic, so having a professional examine your eyes is incredibly helpful in preventing permanent damage.

When Do I Need an Eye Exam?

Ensuring you make time to see your optometrist at least once a year allows you to get the care you need when you need it.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends that adults aged 19 to 64 have an eye exam at least every 2 years. However, those with diabetes or other underlying health concerns are at a higher risk of developing an eye disease. The CAO recommends high-risk individuals see their eye doctor more frequently to closely monitor their ocular health.

At Island Eye Care, we recommend visiting us annually so we can get to know you and your eyes on a personal level. The more frequently you visit your optometrist, the more likely we can detect any warning signs of disease.

As we age, our risk of developing a serious eye condition increases significantly. For adults over 65, the CAO recommends an eye exam at least once a year. Early identification and treatment of eye diseases is key to protecting and preserving your eyesight.

What Does an Eye Exam Entail?

Although testing your eyesight is an essential component of an eye exam, there is much more involved. When you visit Island Eyecare, our friendly staff will ensure all your information is on file and set you up with your optometrist.

Your optometrist will ask you a few preliminary questions about your health history, current needs, and lifestyle to determine your visual demands. We will then measure the visual acuity of each eye, with and without corrective lenses. If you need a prescription, we will use a phoropter to determine what lens power you need for ideal vision. We may also test your colour vision.

We’ll then assess your binocular vision, or how well your eyes work together. This involves assessing your eye coordination, depth perception, and eye movements.

We will then take a closer look at the health of your eyes. Then your optometrist will look at your eye’s external components and how your pupils respond to light, using a biomicroscope and ophthalmoscope. Your optometrist may also dilate your pupils to get a better look at the inside of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve.
