Clear Vision Without the Bulk of Eyeglasses

If you have a refractive error that causes objects at certain distances to appear out of focus, you’re probably no stranger to the world of corrective eyewear. However, if you’ve been wearing eyeglasses all your life and are looking for a change, contact lenses may be a great option.

Contact lenses are small plastic discs that are worn directly on the surface of the eye. The plastic they’re made from depends on the type, but they typically come in either soft or rigid.

Soft contact lenses are very comfortable to wear, and you’ll likely get used to wearing them very quickly. Rigid lenses may take a little longer to get used to, but it’s unlikely you’ll notice them after wearing them for a few weeks.

Specialty Contact Lenses

If traditional contact lenses don’t work for you or have certain eye conditions that make them uncomfortable, there are other options you can explore. At Island Eyecare, we want your eyes to feel healthy and comfortable, so we carry a broad range of lens types to find you something that works for your unique needs and lifestyle.

We carry CooperVision’s MiSight 1 Day contact lenses to effectively address myopia in children. We offer various methods of myopia control to halt the progression of the condition without sacrificing comfort.

Toric contact lenses are useful for individuals with astigmatism, which affects the curvature of the cornea. They are shaped like a slice of a torus, a geometric shape that resembles a donut rather than a slice of a sphere.

If you have presbyopia, your eyes have difficulty focusing on objects near and far due to the eye’s natural lens becoming inflexible with age. Multifocal contact lenses combat presbyopia by offering multiple prescriptions in each lens, allowing you to see near and distant objects.

For corneal irregularities like keratoconus, standard contact lenses can feel uncomfortable and may even be painful. Scleral contact lenses are larger than standard lenses and rest on the whites of the eyes (the sclera). They vault over the cornea, allowing fluid to continually bathe the cornea and create a smooth surface for light to enter the eye.

If you have a corneal irregularity, we’ll likely perform ocular coherence tomography or corneal topography to determine the thickness of your retina and steepness of your cornea, respectively. These tests help us make an educated recommendation on what lenses will work best for you.

Most lenses have a recommended period you should wear them. Depending on varying factors, like your familiarity with contacts, your ocular health, and lifestyle, we may recommend a particular type over another.

Typically, disposable lenses come in daily wear, weekly wear, and monthly wear. Some are designed to be worn day and night, while others are only worn during the day and taken out for sleeping.

The Contact Lens Exam

When you come in for a contact lens exam, we’ll first assess the overall health of your eye and visual acuity. Once we determine the correct prescription for your eyes, we’ll recommend a type of lens for you to try. We’ll give you a trial pair, which you’ll wear for around a week, and invite you to return for a follow-up.

At the follow-up appointment, we’ll ask you if they were comfortable and address any concerns you may have. If they didn’t work, we’ll try a different type and repeat the process until you find a style that does.

Overall, we want you to have clear vision and healthy eyes. If you’re curious about contact lenses, we recommend giving us a call or booking an appointment for a full examination.
