What’s there to see in Sydney, NS?

Located on Cape Breton Island, Sydney is a charming city on the harbour. It’s also the largest city on the island, filled with fun and unique destinations for locals and visitors.

Scenic sites

Although it’s not a work of nature, perhaps the most eye-catching place in Sydney is the world’s largest fiddle that sits in front of the modern Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion on the Sydney, NS, waterfront. At 18- metres high and lit up by night, you’ll never miss this fiddle. For a lovely view of the water and downtown Sydney, we recommend picnicking at the Petersfield Provincial Park, which overlooks the harbour.

Live & learn local history

Spend some time at the Cape Breton Centre for Heritage & Science, on George Street in downtown Sydney, to focus on the development of this area. There are displays that highlight the culture, heritage, and science of the region, and a special spot just for kids in the Discovery Corner. Or tour Cossit House, one of the island’s oldest structures that’s now a living museum for celebrating the Gaelic lore of Nova Scotia. Bring home an authentic souvenir – you can churn butter, weave, or make a candle here.

Take a walk

The Cabot Trail is one of the most famous trails in the country, winding along the Bras d’Or Lakes and the coast of St. Ann’s Harbour, and it’s only a short drive from Sydney. While the whole hike takes about five days, you can tackle parts of it on a day trip. Another fun place to stretch your legs is by following the Cape Breton Artisan Trail Map, which leads you through the studios of local artisans. There are chocolatiers, pottery artists, jewelers, soap makers, and more. Meet the craftspeople, discuss their artwork, and buy a few designs to bring home!
